Born in New York in 1958, Surman is an emerging California
artist. Trained as a professional designer, Thom’s
current work is an amalgamation of his fine art and design
experiences. He creates photographs in controlled studio
environments as well as images recorded from nature. The
images are manipulated with various computer programs and
painted with oil on canvas directly from a video screen and
printed output.
For the past decade, Thom Surman has recorded with oil and
canvas, “Ancient Faces” of the Maasai people as
diminishing landscapes. In addition, he has begun an oil
series of imagined settings titled “Mystic
Landscapes-New Elements of Nature.”
