ERICKSON ART GLASS
Kimberly
Erickson has been involved with the visual arts since she
was a child, always busy with projects. In college she
studied interior design, and devoted her electives to the
fiber arts.
“As a designer I considered the spaces I designed as
a blank canvas, with the various furnishings the mediums
for creative expression.”
Kimberly went on to graduate school, earning an M.A. in
Fiber, and an M.F.A. in craft. Here too,
the creative process was paramount, with the different
mediums her tools for expression.
“Years later I happened upon hot glass. I had always
been fascinated by it, and had collected it. Here was my
chance to become involved. It was as if I had finally
figured out what I wanted to do when I grew up.”
“My approach to glass is very different from most
glass artists. Because of my experience with other media
and my non-traditional training, my glass and my style are
unique to me.”
“I work with thick, clear glass and jewel-toned
color. Because of the liquid nature of the molten glass I
can blend combinations of color in a watercolor-like
manner; and because of the hardness of the glass when cold,
I can cut and polish crisp, clear edges to create windows
into the piece. This allows me to explore the reflective
and refractive nature of the glass.”
“In my sculptural pieces I combine a variety of
elements. Each is blown separately, cut, polished, and
assembled to create the final piece. In my current work the
forms have a distinctly architectural nature. I tend to
think of them as little monuments.”
