Raised
in the wide-open spaces of Kansas, Cathy Krieger grew up
riding horses and dreaming of the west. After graduating
from the University of Kentucky, she followed that dream
and headed west to Arizona where she has lived for over 30
years.
Primarily a self-taught artist, Cathy works in several
mediums-clay, bronze, paint and printmaking. As ideas
evolve, she may re-visit one medium or combine others in a
new way. Whereas her early portraiture work was cast in
bronze, her portraits now are clay or are created
completely differently using paint or printmaking.
Cathy’s clay work, though seemingly asymmetrical or
loose in form, is dependent on knowledge of design
principles using textures, edges, balance, and contrast to
create her own unique statement.
Always an outdoorswoman, she turned to painting and
printmaking to express her love of the southwest landscape.
“Painting ‘en plein air,” to capture a
moment, to interpret it for oneself, is the most gratifying
and difficult of challenges.”
“All I can really offer through my art work is my
personal response to the living of each day.”
